Features of motorcycle insurance are similar to those of bike insurance. Third-party liability insurance is compulsory, and proof of this must be presented when registering the motorcycle at the transport department, whether your vehicle is new or used. In the case of new motorbikes, you also have to present the vehicle data card, which can be obtained from a vehicle dealer. If you are not the motorcycle’s first owner, you must carry the previous documents the vehicle.
Motorcyclist’s third-party liability insurance offers coverage of up to CHF 100 million for damage caused by your motorcycle to other road users. This applies to both personal injury and property damage. Damage to your own motorbike is not covered by liability insurance.
Comprehensive motor insurance covers damage to the bodywork of your two-wheeler. You do not need to take out that insurance to legally drive your motorbike, but if you cause an accident yourself or your vehicle is stolen, a lack of comprehensive cover will expose you to costs. Like car insurance, comprehensive motorcycle insurance comes in partial and full coverage options.
Partially comprehensive insurance covers damage caused by theft, windshield breakage, fire, vandalism, martens and natural phenomena such as floods, hail, storms, rockslides, landslides and avalanches. Collision damage is not included in that option.
Fully comprehensive motorcycle insurance covers the same risks as the partial option with additional protection against the costs of collision damage, e.g., due to crashes and collisions.
Third-party liability motor insurance and comprehensive motor insurance do not cover all risks related to your motorcycle. Fortunately, you can purchase a thorough package of supplemental insurance to provide extra coverage for your vehicle. Below is a selection of the most important additional benefits.
Once you have purchased this supplemental coverage, the insurance company will pay for damage caused by your gross negligence, too. Consequently, the insurance company waives its statutory right of recourse and coverage amount reduction.
It covers the post-accident medical expenses of the driver and passenger. This insurance covers medical expenses and becomes effective in the event of disability or death. In case of a hospital stay, a hospital allowance is offered. If the driver or passenger is temporarily unfit to work, a daily benefit is paid. It does not matter who the perpetrator is. The money is paid before that question is answered.
Whether you’re travelling in Switzerland or abroad, this service provides support in case of emergencies. If you need a tow, your insurance company will handle it and ensure your safety. Road Assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Fully comprehensive motor insurance still does not cover all damage that may affect your motorcycle. If an unknown perpetrator scratches or damages your parked vehicle, the repair costs will only be covered if you have supplemental parking damage insurance.
Protective motorbike clothing is usually very expensive. Supplemental insurance covers your helmet, protective jacket, leather suit, boots and gloves – both against theft and damage. The insurance also applies to the passenger’s protective equipment.
If you have anything in the boot of your motorcycle and the items get damaged or destroyed, the insurance will cover their costs, which usually amount to several thousand Swiss francs.
In the case of standard discount protection, the first claim event of the year does not affect your premium. That means you don’t have to pay a higher premium if there is only one claim event per year. However, you can buy a supplemental option to always maintain your premium at the same level, regardless of the number of damage events.
This additional insurance becomes effective in the event of a total loss. If such loss is suffered, more than the actual value of the motorcycle is compensated – you receive at least 10% over that value.
Changing your motorcycle insurance usually poses no challenges.
You can do it in the following instances:
When entering certain European countries, proof of third-party liability insurance must be presented, whether you are travelling by car or motorcycle. The universal document that provides such proof is the Green Card, an international insurance card recognised (almost) everywhere in Europe. It is often sent automatically together with the insurance documents when you take out your policy. Otherwise, it can be easily ordered online. Issuing that card usually does not entail any additional costs.
